Brian P. Hakan for the past 30+ years has worked in the marketing & trademark licensing business. He has served in each of the three major roles of the licensing equation throughout this time — as a retailer, as a licensee and as a licensor. Here's a trail of Brian's time after graduating from SM East in 1967 - following his graduation from The University of Kansas, Brian became a teacher. After 3 years teaching overseas and in the United States, Brian's first foray into the business community was as a commercial Real Estate Broker, where he lived and worked in the St. Louis area, serving on the Board of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, and working on Clayton Center & The Barn at Lucerne real estate projects. He got his first taste of the Licensing Business when, with partners, he bought an existing The Athlete's Foot store in 1976 & expanded the operation to 8 St. Louis area stores & office/warehouse, growing the operation to a chain of 13 The Athlete's Foot stores in 3 markets; St. Louis, Phoenix & Las Vegas. He later followed that with a position as National Sales Manager for NIKE, living in the Portland, OR area and working at NIKE's Beaverton, Oregon headquarters. Brian moved back to Overland Park in the early 80's and joined Jostens' Artex Apparel Manufacturing division as its Licensing Manager, obtaining and managing licenses such as Looney Tunes, Peanuts, Major League Baseball (where we made much of The KC Royals' World Series Championship Merchandise), The NFL, The NBA, The NHL, Anheuser Busch and many others. Brian also established the first ever joint license arrangement, which was between Peanuts and The NBA in the early 1980's. After a brief stint at Andrews' McMeel's Universal Licensing Division in 1986, Brian founded Brian P. Hakan & Associates to further his love of and connections in the licensing business. Brian served for 6 years as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association (LIMA). He was elected by his peers to serve as President/Chairman of that association from 1997- 2000. Hakan & Associates was awarded the prestigious ‘Brand Licensing Program of the Year' award from LIMA for its work with Taco Bell in 1998. Brian also serves as manager of Hakan Enterprises which owns the majority of stock in Sock Puppet, LLC, which now owns The Sock Puppet intellectual property. Brian P. Hakan & Associates has developed successful long term licensing programs for a select number of trademark holders and serves as consultant for some of America's leading organizations (see below). Brian is an Eagle Scout and has been active on several boards, including a 5 year stint on the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation Board and several other charitable causes. He is however, most proud of his roles as father of Daniel and Brianna, and partner of wife, Julie.
